The Infiniti Project Black S Special Edition with its rank of 1321 should be a little worse than the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG Special Edition, whose Pro rank is 1322. But I recently had the feeling that the Mercedes is not as dominant any more as it once was. But is that really true? Let's find out!
Day #1 of Classic Season, from 1000 points (Amateur League) to 1200+ points (Challenger League), the car with the higher average points per race wins.
My first thought after the first race with the Infiniti @ 1000 points was: "Too easy!" And it turned out to be true: The Infiniti is a nice starter, and it outruns most opponents on the track or at least puts them under a lot of pressure. So if you use this car in Amateur League, it's usually a safe victory, unless you're starting from the very back of the grid.
The only small backdraft I see is that it's not very agile while on nitro. But in comparison to the typical D-class opponent, the Aston Martin DB9 Coupé, the Infiniti's acc is almost as fast, and on the track, it's much stronger, so the DB9 loses its start advantage quite early.
The Mercedes is actually a good car. It has very good nitro efficiency, so it's powerful on tracks where nitro bottles are rare. And it's easy to keep your opponents behind you once you're in the lead. But it has many little backdrafts that sum up to a real problem in actual competition:
It's a bad starter and thus gets wrecked at the start easily. It has a wide drift radius, so it's bad for the big spirals in Munich and Sector 8, and also for other full-drift spots. But most of all, it lacks the agility that’s needed for wheel-to-wheel fights. So especially when starting from the back of a large grid, it can be very difficult to even reach position #2.
Summary
I had expected both cars to be equally strong. But their similar looks deceived me. The Infiniti not only achieves better results, I find it also more fun to drive than the Mercedes. So I clearly award this victory to the Infiniti, and the Mercedes has been removed from my personal list of best cars.
