I remember times when the Ariel Atom V8 was the undisputed D-class king. But since then, it has moved through the ranks and classes, and so I wondered: Is it still competitive? I'm testing it against the McLaren MP4/8, which I know is excellent on tracks where nitro efficiency is not so important, so people use it a lot in the 1412 bracket.
6 races in a row, Classic Season day #7, around 1850 points, full boosters
10 points for 1st place, 6 points for 2nd, 4 for 3rd, 3 for 4th, 2 for 5th and 1 for 6th
The Atom is a low flyer, which is good, but it's also a slow starter, which is bad. It loses the start against the McLaren, and even against the Maserati GranTurismo. It's agile in curves, so drifting is almost not necessary. And if it is, the Atom has a very powerful drift - almost too powerful, so you have to dose it carefully.
The McLaren in a nutshell: an awesome starter with a lousy nitro efficiency. If you use this car, make sure you win the start and stay in front, and then put the main focus on keeping your car under nitro and stealing away as many nitro bottles as possible from the guy behind you, bc otherwise he will out-nitro you with ease in the end. So you have to be a racer for a few seconds, and from then on, you're a nitro manager. Perfect nitro is a must, triple-tap is absolutely not an option in most cases.
That said, it's probably clear that racing in Tokyo with its long straights and the few nitro bottles is a nail-biter with the McLaren. But racing in Transylvania with those long, fast curves is an absolute dream with this car.
So currently, my personal best cars (out of the ones I own and have at Pro) in the 1412 bracket are: BMW M6, McLaren MP4/8 and Audi R8 LMS Ultra.

The driver sitting on the right side feels somewhat wrong for me as a continental European, but on the other hand, you have to drive on the left side in Japan, too. And the Atom's nitro efficiency is good enough to keep it on nitro the whole time in Tokyo, which is a valuable property of this car. I only lost one race against another Ariel Atom and got crashed once in another race by a McLaren. In one race, an Audi R8 LMS Ultra came dangerously close, but I managed to defy it.

Summary
Although the Ariel still has some potential, I'm a little disappointed. So the McLaren is the clear victor of this review. I'm even removing the Ariel from my best-cars-of-the-bracket list.
